close your eyes. remember when you were a child. you were trying to sleep in your parents' bed but failing. you did not want to be scolded for not being asleep so your eyes were closed. you could see nothing.except you would hear the sounds around you. you would hear the sound of footsteps on the floor. a cabinet door swinging open. the weight of someone on the side of the bed. a slight murmur as someone whispered to another because they thought you were asleep.
you cannot see anything. but you hear everything. and because you do not know what those sounds mean-- but you think you are in a safe place-- you think them reassuring. that these are the sounds of family, solace, and haven.
but they are only sounds. and you cannot see anything.
