Road Trip: On the Road Again

Well, life's like a road that you travel on
There's one day here and the next day gone

Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind

There's a world outside every darkened door
Where the blues won't haunt you anymore

For the brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore

We won't hesitate
To break down the garden gate
There's not much time left today, yeah

Life is a highway, I wanna ride it
All night long

If you're going my way, I wanna drive it
All night long

Through all these cities and all these towns
It's in my blood and it's all around

I love you now like I loved you then
This is the road and these are the hands

Tom Cochran, Life is a Highway

And speaking of long trips, I accompanied my brother on his test run for the Bataan Death March ultramarathon* a couple of weekends ago.** The starting line was at Mariveles, Bataan and ended 50 kilometers away in Abucay.

Fun times there, trying to run under the heat of the sun. You can check out his run and pictures here and here. The actual run-- a whopping 100 kilometers all the way to San Fernando, Pampanga-- will be in March so that's not even the half of it yet!

*to commemorate the infamous Bataan Death March where 5,000-10,000 Filipino and 600-650 American prisoners of war died en route to Camp O'Donnell prison

**no, I didn't run, was part of the support crew

Road Trip: A Trip to Mayon

Under the island... middle of a mountain
There is a big bad... boomin' system

Blowin' speakers... woofers and tweeters
Amplifiers... melted wires
The parties exploded... the core is corroded

Under ground... the Puget Sound
Cause a shiftin'... and a drifin'
Big black boom box...stuck in the hot rock

It's in there flowin'... it's in there growin'
You don't believe me... that this scenery
Could be a cold blooded killer

It's gonna blow... Volcano
It's gonna blow... Volcano
It's gonna blow... Volcano

Road Trip: All Roads Lead to Bicol

Meet in the morning, I'll have the motor runnin'

Down frosty lanes, under glass blue sky. This is livin', this is livin'

I haven't come to be a stranger, I haven't come to break your home

I haven't come to harm your children, I've come to be your love

Don't let the grass grow under your feet

The sands of time keep runnin'

For now at last I'm down on the street

With the engine runnin'

The Things We Keep Behind: The Color of Sky

Batter my heart, three-person'd God; for you
As yet but knock; breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.

John Donne, Holy Sonnet 14

The Things We Keep Behind: These Are Days

Our destiny is not frightful by being unreal; it is frightful because it is irreversible and iron-clad. Time is the substance I am made of. Time is a river which sweeps me along, but I am the river; it is a tiger which destroys me, but I am the tiger; it is a fire which consumes me, but I am the fire. The world, unfortunately, is real; I, unfortunately, am Borges.

Jorge Luis Borges, "A New Refutation of Time" (1946)
